VERB TO BE
The verb to
be is the most important verb in the English language. Be
is an irregular verb with several forms. We use be as a main verb and an
auxiliary verb.
Be as a main verb has a number of meanings. We use the verb to be:
To talk about permanent or temporary
qualities or states. Example: The food is so good in Italy.
To talk about our nationality and our identity within
groups or clubs. Example: I am Spaniard. They are Real Madrid fans.
To talk about a person’s job or profession. Note
the use of a with singular names of jobs and professions. Example: My
sister is a vet. My brothers are firefighters.
To talk about age. Example: How old are you? I am 39
years old.
To talk how people are related (relationships). Example:
Sarah is my cousin. Who is your father?
To refer to where people, places and things are
situated. Example: I am at home. The shops are at the end of the street. Where is your jacket?
To talk about time and dates. Examples: It’s six o’clock.
Today is Monday. My birthday is on the 23rd of December.What time is it? What day is it today?
To talk about behaviour and personality. Examples: She
is a nice person. He is not mean.
To describe feelings, emotions and situations. Examples:
I am happy. They are sad. Are you hungry?
To talk about and describe people, animals, places and things.
Example: London is a beautiful city. How is the weather in London? It's raining
Be is one of three auxiliary verbs in English: be, do and have. We use be to make the continuous form and the passive voice:
I’m reading a book about the Second World War at the moment. (continuous)
The job was advertised last week. (passive)

The past tense of To Be in English has two forms: WAS and WERE

We refer to future time using be going to or will. Examples:
I’m going to London on Saturday.
Are you going to London on Saturday?
I’m not going to London on Saturday?
I will be a vet when I grow up.
Will you be a good vet when you grow up?
Yes, I will be the best vet when I grow up.
No, I will not (won’t) be a vet, I will be a doctor.
Write some sentences using the verb to be with different tenses as well as in negative and interrogative form.
