We can divide the words into eight different types according to the work they do in the sentence. Sometimes a word can be in more than one part of speech depending on its function. Some teachers include a 9th part of speech: Articles. A noun is a word that functions as the name of something. Nouns are words that name people, animals, places, things or ideas. Examples: London, table, hope, John. Sentence: Robert goes to school by bus . Pronouns are used to replace nouns in sentences to avoid repetition. Examples: I, you, it, we, us, them, those. Sentence: I want to play football with him .   An adjective is a word we use generally to describe a noun. It gives more information about something. Examples: cold, big, happy, young, two, fun. Sentence: The young boy has a red car.  A verb is a word that shows an action, what someone is doing or did or a state of being. Examples: go, speaking, lived, been, is. Sentence: I study English ...
