QUESTION WORDS


The most common question words in English are the following:
WHAT is used to ask for specific information about something (I want to know the thing).  What’s your name? What’s your favorite color? What time is it?
WHERE is used to ask questions about place or location (I want to know the position). Examples: Where do you live? Where is the supermarket? Where are you now?
WHEN is used to ask about an occasion or the time that something happened or will happen (I want to know the time). Examples: When is your birthday?  When can we open the presents?
WHY is used to obtain an explanation or a reason (I want to know the reason or purpose). Examples:  Why are you sad? Why do you like school? Normally the response begins with "Because..."
WHICH is used to ask and we have to choose between alternatives (one of a limited number of things). Examples:  Which flavour do you prefer chocolate or vanilla?     
WHO, WHOM and WHOSE are used for asking about people.
WHO is only used when referring to people (I want to know someone’s identity). Examples: Who is your best friend? Who is that person at the corner? The answer is the subject of the verb.
WHOM is used to ask about the object (person) in the sentence. Examples:  Whom can I ask for information about insects to? Whom did you speak to? Who did you give the book to? The answer is the object of the verb.
WHOSE is used to ask about possession (I want to know the owner). Examples: Whose is this jacket? Whose are those books?  
HOW is used to describe the manner that something is done (I want to know the way). Examples:  How do you go to school? How do you cook pasta? How did you learn English?
