POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES


When we learn Pronouns (Subject, Object and Possessive) to replace nouns in sentences, it is also important to learn possessive adjectives.
Possessive adjectives are used to show possession or ownership of something. When we use them to refer to people, it is in the sense of relationship. They are always located before the noun they refer to.
Possessive adjectives need to agree with the possessor and not with the thing that is possessed and do not include an S to the adjective when the noun is plural like in many other languages. However, the verb that is used needs to be in agreement with the noun - if the noun is singular then the verb is singular; if the noun is plural then the verb is plural. Examples:
-          Her boyfriend is very handsome. (She has a boyfriend. He is the boyfriend of a girl.)
-          Her dogs are so noisy. (She has more than one dog.)
-          Our cars are the fastest. (We have more than one car.)
-          Their car is in the garage. (They only have one car that it is in the garage.)
-          My car is white. (I have one car.) / My cars are white. (I have more than one car.)
-          Our car is expensive. (We have one car.) / Our cars are expensive. (We have more than one car.)
Be careful not to confuse its and it's.
Its = Possessive adjective for It. Example: I love London, its atmosphere is amazing.
It's = a contraction of it is. Example: It’s raining. 

Use a possessive adjective in the gap in each sentence based on the word(s) in parentheses.
1. Would you like to buy ____ cookies? (My friends and I)
2. Alison asked ____ some questions. (Mary and Frank)
3. I think ____ idea is crazy! (You)
4. I'd like to hear ____ opinion. (Susan)
5. She works for ____company. (John)
6. That's ____ book on the table. (I)
7. We bought ____ book last week. (Dan Brown)
8. ____ color is red. (The car)
9. I love____ performance, it is really amazing. (You and your classmates)

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. The subject of a sentence is a person or thing that performs the action of the verb. A subject pronoun is used as the subject of a sentence in place of a person’s or thing’s name or description, particularly after the subject has already been introduced to avoid repetition.
