APRIL FOOLS' DAY

Celebrated on the 1st of April, April Fools’ Day, also known as All Fool’s Day is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. It is the custom in the UK and many countries around the world to play tricks, harmless pranks and practical jokes on someone. A simple example would be telling your friend that their shoelaces are undone. If the person falls for the joke, then they are called an ‘April Fool’. That’s why you shouldn’t believe what is said to you on this day.
Of course all this is done just for fun. In fact, it’s only half a day because April Fools’ Day finishes at midday. Superstition says that playing pranks past noon or not responding to pranks with good humor will attract bad luck. No more jokes after lunchtime, please!
It is a custom that is followed by several media (television, radio stations, newspapers…) to carry fake stories. They clarify later that it was an April Fools’ Day prank story. BBC once aired that spaghetti grows on trees in Switzerland making millions believe it.
The tradition of pranks has been observed since centuries across a variety of cultures. However, it is till today a mystery why we celebrate April Fools’ Day on the 1st of April. The official origin is unknown. The most popular theory is that the day was caused by the switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in the 16th century. The original calendar saw the New Year beginning on March 25, with celebrations occurring on the first day of April. The switch moved the New Year to the 1st of January, but many still thought that the 1st of April was the proper day to celebrate; hence they were “April fools.” Another theory says the day is related to the arrival of spring, when nature “fools” people with irregular weather. Historians have also linked April Fools' Day to an ancient Roman festival known as Hilaria, which was celebrated by people dressing up in disguises. Whatever its origin may be, April Fools’ Day has evolved to have its own lore and rules.
If you’re ever in the UK on the 1st of April, you’d better watch out!

  1. In my country, there is an April Fool's Day, but instead
1st of April , it is 28th of December. The most traditional joke is to stick a paper stick on the back of a person, I am not much of making jokes but it seems funny to me and when they make them to me I laugh at myself for having believed the joke or for the fun that I thought so.
