ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY
We use some
adverbs to describe how frequently we do an activity.
Adverbs of INDEFINITE frequency: The exact frequency is not defined.
An adverb of frequency goes before a main verb
(except with To Be). Example: I usually
eat toasts for breakfast.
An adverb of frequency goes after the verb To
Be. Example: She is always happy.
When we use an auxiliary verb (have, will, must,
might, could, would, can, etc.), the adverb is placed between the auxiliary and
the main verb. This is also true for to be. Example: I have never been to New York.
We can also use the
following adverbs at the start of a sentence: usually, normally, often,
frequently, sometimes, and occasionally. Example: Occasionally, I like to eat Chinese food. But we cannot use
the following at the beginning of a sentence: always, seldom, rarely, hardly,
ever, never.
We use hardly ever
and never with positive, not negative verbs. Example: I never drink alcohol.
We use ever in questions and negative statements. Examples: Have you
ever been to New York? I haven't ever been to New York. (The same
as 'I have never been to New York').
Adverbs of DEFINITE frequency: The exact frequency is specified.
We normally use adverbs of DEFINITE frequency
to respond a question that contains HOW OFTEN?
Adverbs of definite frequency occur at the beginning
or more often the end of a sentence.
These adverbs include:
Number + Times + A + Time Period. Examples:
once/ twice/ three times a month. Sentence: I go to the gym three times a week.
Every + Time Period. Examples: every day, every
week. Sentence: I have a shower every day.
We also look at those time adverbs that end in
-LY that can be used instead. Examples: weekly = every week, monthly = every
month. Sentence: We will pay you monthly.
Every + Number + Time Period. Examples: every
two days, every three weeks. Sentence: I go to London every six months.
How often do
you brush your teeth a day?
What do you
usually have for breakfast?
What time do
you normally get up on the weekends?
