PARTS OF SPEECH

We can divide the words into eight different types according to the work they do in the sentence. Sometimes a word can be in more than one part of speech depending on its function. Some teachers include a 9th part of speech: Articles.

A noun is a word that functions as the name of something. Nouns are words that name people, animals, places, things or ideas. Examples: London, table, hope, John.
Sentence: Robert goes to school by bus.

Pronouns are used to replace nouns in sentences to avoid repetition. Examples: I, you, it, we, us, them, those.
Sentence: I want to play football with him.

An adjective is a word we use generally to describe a noun. It gives more information about something. Examples: cold, big, happy, young, two, fun.
Sentence: The young boy has a red car.

A verb is a word that shows an action, what someone is doing or did or a state of being. Examples: go, speaking, lived, been, is.
Sentence: I study English every day.

A preposition shows the relation of a noun or pronoun to other words in a sentence. Prepositions are used before a noun or pronoun to describe the place, time or direction. Examples: at, on, in, from, with, about.
Sentence: The ball is under the table.

An adverb is a word that describes an action verb, modifies an adjective or another adverb. It tells us how an action happens, how often, where, when and to what extent. Examples: slowly, very, always, well, too.
Sentence: I always drive carefully

Conjunction are words we use to join two words, ideas, phrases or clauses together and shows how they are connected. Examples: and, or, but, because, until, if.
Sentence: It’s rainy and cold today so I prefer to stay at home.

An interjection is a word or phrase that expresses a strong emotion or exclamation. Examples: Wow! Hurrah! Oops! Hey!  Interjections are often followed by an exclamation mark.
Sentence:  Wow! I love your new shoes.

Articles help define nouns. Examples: the, an, a.
Sentence: There is a cat on the table.

  1. Today is a day more but a day less. We have to stay at home, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun. Now that we have more time at home, we can do things that we never get to do! In my case, I love drawing, but I nearly never have time. Now I do this every day! I also keep doing homework and sports, it's fun! With these three things, my day is nearly complete. My dad has set his big drum set and between the three of us we have cleaned under every couch. I like to stay positive and think this will finish very soon, hurrah!

    1. Great job! Nice to read your comment. It's important to keep a positive attitude during the lockdown. I agree with you, we have to do the things we normally can't due to we don't have time. I take advantage to read some books. I hope to see you soon too. Take care!
