NOUNS
A noun is a word that names a
person (John), animal (lion), place (restaurant), thing (ball)
or idea (love). Types of nouns in English:
Proper nouns are used to name a
specific and unique person, place or thing. They begin with capital letters.
Example: London
Common nouns are used to name
people, places or things in general without being specific. Example: city
Concrete nouns refer to people and
things that exist physically and at least one of the senses can detect (can be
seen, felt, heard, smelled/smelt, or tasted). Ex. Water.
Abstract nouns have no physical
existence. They refer to ideas, emotions or concepts you cannot see, touch,
hear, smell or taste. Ex. Freedom, justice…
Compound nouns are two or more
words that create a noun. They can be written as one word (waterfall),
words joined by a hyphen (mother-in-law) or as separate words (credit
card).
A Collective noun is a word that refers
to a set or group of people, animals or things. For example, a team is a
group of individuals playing on the same side generally with the same
objectives. Collective nouns are often followed by of + plural noun e.g. a bunch
of flowers.
Verbal nouns (Gerunds) are nouns formed
from a verb. All gerunds end in –ing. Ex. Running is good for
you. They are sometimes confused as being verbs because of their -ing ending
but they are nouns (gerunds) because we are talking about the concept of
running, we are talking about a thing.
Countable nouns are nouns that can
be counted. They have a singular and a plural form and can be used with a
number or a/an before them. Examples: car,
cup, eye, butterfly…
Uncountable
nouns are nouns that cannot be counted. They often refer to
substances (plastic), liquids (milk), gases (air) and
abstract ideas (happiness).
